Globular Cluster and PNe Luminosity Functions

Globular cluster systems and PNe are distributed in very extended halos around galaxies. In early-type galaxies this distribution and motion can give useful information about the structured form of galaxies and in particular the shape and distribution of dark matter (Danziger et al. 1997). In clusters of relatively nearby galaxies one can also anticipate detecting intergalactic objects that have been drawn out of galaxies as a result of interactions with others. A large field would allow extending these detections and tracing their properties to large distances because much better corrections for sky background could also be made. Luminosity functions for both classes of objects can be used as accurate distance indicators. Detection involves selective use of appropriate filters. Spectroscopic follow-up with a large telescope such as the LBT would be mandatory.
