Scientific Justification and Observation Strategy

The advent of CCD camera has greatly improved the accuracy of photometric data over a substantial portion of the spectrum. Up to now the two main drawbacks of these detectors have been the low efficiency in the near UV band and the size of the detectors. As a consequence of these limits during the last years deep, multiband surveys of stellar populations in the Galaxy and in the Local Group (LG) galaxies have been poorly undertaken. The LBT equipped with the wide field CCD camera discussed in this project could be crucial for overcoming these difficulties. In the following we discuss some observational projects which can be accomplished with the LBT and briefly outline the impact that these new data can have on both stellar and galactic astrophysics.
